Event Description

Happy Mardi Gras!

It's Fat Tuesday, the last day before Ash Wednesday when the Christian observance of Lent begins.

Originally FatTuesday (celebrated in Western culture) and Fat Thursday (less commonly celebrated) came about to use up all the lard, sugar, eggs and fruit in thehouse because it was forbidden by Catholic fasting practices.

Paczkis (pronounced pontch-ki), the iconic baked good of Fat Tuesday, are a deep-fried piece of dough with a super sweet filling covered in powdered sugar. Aslice of heaven and LOADED with fat, sugar and calories, it's also the world's (unofficial) most difficult word to spell!

Paczkis Day is most commonly celebrated in the US in Buffalo, Toledo, Cleveland, Grand Rapids, Milwaukee, South Bend and Detroit (our home town!) due to the large polish population. Hamtramck, an enclave of Detroit, even has a Paczki Parade!

What's your favorite kind of paczki?
