Event Description

The San Diego PoetrySLAM is slowly becoming one of the nation’s premiere poetry slam venues. It provides a space for poets of all skill levels to fellowship and support each other in a competitive atmosphere while facilitating a transformational experience for the audience.

A poetry slam is a competition at which poets read or recite original work. These performances are then judged on a numeric scale by previously selected members of the audience.

The San Diego Poetry Slam is a poetry competition that occurs on the 2nd Monday of every month.

Slam Rules:

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

The slam is open to anyone who would like to participate.

HOW MANY POEMS SHOULD I HAVE?

Poems must be original and written by the performer. All participants should have 3 poems prepared.

HOW DO I SIGN UP AND COMPETE?

Signups will begin at 7:15 pm and the list will close at 7:45 pm (unless we need more competitors). There are 13 slots available and 12 will be in the competition. The 1st 10 to sign up are automatically in. The final 2 slots and sacrificial poet will be chosen by random draw.

Wewill have a separate line for the poets who wish to compete and those who are interested are encouraged to arrive early because we often have a lot of people trying to sign up.

The line will be monitored to make sure no one is cutting and signing up others who aren't in line will not be allowed.

JUDGING:

Judges will be selected randomly from the audience and will score each poet on a scale of 0 to 10.

QUALIFIERS:

Qualifiers are 2 round slams that will occur once a month from September to March. In each qualifier, poets will be given the opportunity to perform 1 original poem in the first round, and the top scorers will advance to the second round where they will perform anotheroriginal poem.

5th Place = 1 point

4th Place= 2 points

3rd Place = 3 points

2nd Place = 4 points

1st place = 5 Points

FINALS?

When all qualifying slams are over, the top ranking poets will compete in the San Diego Grand Slam Finals for the opportunity to represent San Diego at the National Poetry Slam.
