Luna 1, was the first spacecraft to reach the vicinity of the Moon, and the first spacecraft to enter the sun's orbit. Intended to impact the moon, Luna 1 was launched as part of the Luna programme in 1959, however it missed the Moon and in the process became the first spacecraft to leave the earth's orbit and enter the sun's.
