Event Description

"How I Survived" is a series that amplifies stories of how folks are surviving the trauma they've lived. Each show will feature a 20-minute performance and a 20-minute interview, with a few slots available for guest readers. Every show, we'll ask the same questions: how did you survive? What are you still surviving? What advice do you have for others who are trying to survive?

This series happens every fourth Thursday at 3 pm CST. It’s streamed to the Surviving the Mic’s YouTube channel and other social media platforms. “How I Survived” centers on the lived experiences of survivors and showcases the many ways that folks are surviving.

Supported by the Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation and produced by Surviving the Mic.
The feature and interview will be hosted by Surviving the Mic's Cherlnell Lane. Our feature this month is Rise!

About your feature:
Rise (they/them) is a Black genderfluid disabled femmeboi from St. Louis currently existing on Potawatomi territory (Chicago). Everything is always changing and that's what they love about themselves, their writing journey, and words in general. Currently, they write from the lens of creating home, embracing rage, simmering love and being deeply committed to their imagination. Imagination as home. Imagination as safety and protection. Imagine to escape for a minute, to cope.. Imagination to believe that the world hella Black and Brown folks have been pushing for is already here, tiny fragments lined in gold, growing a foundation conducive to thriving. Imagination as realism/magical realism. Imagination to directly say what needs to be said when the actual story is to hard to tell. When they are not writing, they are day dreaming, nerding out about trauma or with their ESA pup, Jelly Ferocious.

About your host:
Cherlnell Lane is an author, speaker, advocate, and facilitator, and performer. She uses words to create incredible worlds, stories, and experiences. Dubbed “The Poetic-Storyteller”, because her poetry tells a story and her stories are poetic. Lane’s written work has transcended genres and covers a multitude of topics and emotions. She's not afraid to discuss trauma, sadness, joy, and laughter in the same session.
Her company, Cherlnell Lane, LLC relates, advocates, and uplifts Black Women. In 2020, Lane created, “Words, from a Black Woman’s Experience” a live, interactive podcast. Where women come to share their stories boldly and unapologetically.
