Event Description

In the wake of George Floyd’s killing, journalists are having their own reckoning on how newsrooms have upheld systemic racism. Some major outlets have announced new teams devoted to covering race and systemic oppression. What does research show about how Black Americans experience the news? What stories need to be told on a broader scale? On Episode 11 of “Informed & Engaged,” we’ll talk with Chicago Reader’s Karen Hawkins, NBC 6 Miami’s Jawan Strader, CBS 2 Chicago’s Dorothy Tucker and ProPublica’s Topher Sanders about the stories news organizations should focus on today. The conversation will also include insights from new research on Black Americans and the media from Amy Mitchell, director of journalism at Pew Research Center, and Priscilla Standridge, senior research consultant at Gallup.
