The pieces included in De: Lata (To Give Us Away) expand on Suárez’s analysis and critique in previous works of the marketing of Latino culture. However, in the new paintings, Suárez focuses on the representation of Latina female identities in the marketing of Latino food products. In so doing, she aims to promote more truthful and potentially empowering images of Latina women. Knowing that the works will elicit a conversation about the place of Latina women in contemporary culture, we have purposely scheduled the exhibition during Women’s History Month.
