As part of Girl Up's 'Exploring COVID-19's Intersectional Impact on Women and Girls Worldwide', the Shadow Pandemic panel will discuss the increased rates of GBV due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Beginning with a discussion about gender-based violence (GBV) before COVID-19, the panel will delve deeply into the alarming increase in GBV worldwide rising in parallel to COVID-19 labeled as ‘the Shadow Pandemic’. The panel will investigate how individuals, civil society, and governments are currently responding to COVID-19’s exacerbation of GBV, with a specific focus on intersectionality, immediacy, and success. With direct attention on global factors that exacerbate GBV and lessons learned from successful anti-GBV initiatives, the panel will culminate in a conversation on the impact of a chaotic future - characterized by climate change caused natural disasters, heightened social polarization, etc - on GBV and gender inequality. The panel will spotlight children, LGBTQIA+, BAME, and disabled communities’ experiences of the Shadow Pandemic.

The panel serves as a fundraiser for the participating organizations that are actively combatting the Shadow Pandemic in their respective communities. Instead of a set ticket price, we are asking for attendees to donate through a ticket purchase however much they can to support these incredible NGO’s and the women and girls they support. 50% of the proceeds will go to the participating organizations, and the other 50% will go to Girl Up.
