Event Description

For many of us, Mother's Day in the age of COVID-19 will be unlike any we've celebrated before. Instead of being together, families will gather electronically and by phone. But for people inside of Illinois' women's prisons, there will be even fewer ways to celebrate. Not only are they already isolated, but many of them are on lockdown and barely able to interact with each other. Let's ensure that these moms and other people at Logan and Decatur Correctional Centers know that the community hasn't forgotten them by sending them emails and lifting them up. In addition, we will do mini teach-ins on issues that impact incarcerated families, like prison gerrymandering and why the census matters, the Illinois parole system, failure to protect laws, and learn about individual cases where people can advocate for release.
Please join The Women's Justice Institute - WJI
and the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, along with Moms United Against Violence and Incarceration, Chicago Books to Women in Prison, Restore Justice Illinois, Illinois Prison Project, Chicago Volunteer Doulas, Love & Protect, and CommunityCave Chicago, for an event on Sunday, May 3, 2020. We'll be meeting on Zoom at bit.ly/MothersDayTogether and also broadcasting to Facebook Live. If you want to write emails with us, you need to join the Zoom, but the teach-ins are available via Facebook Live.

In addition, we will be raising funds to purchase email credits to send and to send to people who are incarcerated so that they can communicate with their friends and families. We'll also use any money raised for care packages for people being released from Logan Correctional Center over the next few months, including backpacks, hygiene products, masks, glove, and soap, and journals. The link to donate to this is bit.ly/SupportWomenInPrison

Please join us-- together we can make sure people are remembered and one step closer to home.
