Event Description

On January 5, 1933, construction begins on the Golden Gate Bridge, as workers began excavating 3.25 million cubic feet of dirt for thestructure’s huge anchorages. When it opened four years later it was the longest bridge span in the world. The bridge was named The Golden Gate by U.S. Captain John C. Fremont who, when he first saw the strait that separatesthe large bay from the ocean said that it would be a golden gate to trade with the Orient.
