Event Description

Black dog syndrome or big black dog syndrome is a disputed phenomenon in which black dogs are passed over for adoption in favor of lighter-colored animals.

Black cats are similarly reported to be subject to the same phenomenon, with the added stigma of superstition and association with witchcraft.

Some US cities prohibit adoption of black cats around Halloween--for fear the felines would be used as holiday props or, worse, sacrifices for those who practice witchcraft.
